Student Sustainability Team at the Faculty of Tourism and Hotels organizes a workshop on the harms of smoking at Yarmouk University”
On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, an awareness workshop titled “Smoking: The Silent Killer and its Dangers to Health and Society”, presented by Dr. Saham Gharaibeh, from the Faculty of Medicine at Yarmouk University, as part of the activities of the ‘Estidama’ student team.
Dr. Gharaibeh reviewed the latest scientific studies that confirm the link between smoking and chronic diseases such as cancer and respiratory diseases, and discussed its negative effects on the environment, the individual and the family environment, passive smoking and the health benefits of smoking cessation, e-smoking and the illusion of safety, in addition to the health centers accredited to provide services for smoking cessation. He emphasized that smoking is not a personal choice, but a societal issue that requires concerted efforts to curb it.
The workshop was attended by a number of faculty members at the faculty, department heads, the assistant dean, and a group of students interested in health and societal issues.
For its part, the college administration praised the initiative of the “Estidama” student team in organizing such awareness events, which are in line with the college's vision in promoting social responsibility and students' health. The workshop concluded with a discussion session in which the attendees raised their inquiries about ways to quit smoking and the role of educational institutions in raising awareness about the dangers of smoking
At the conclusion of the workshop, Dr. Gharaibeh stressed the importance of spreading awareness within academic institutions and promoting a culture of prevention, especially among university youth
